Goanna is the name (maybe nickname) of a secondary minor character in the film "FernGully: The Last Rainforest", voiced by American rapper and actor Tone Loc. He was designed by Susan Kroyer and his key assistant animator was Mi Yul Lee.
Goanna is depicted as a large, well fed Australian Monitor Lizard (Varanus Spp.), with a deep, soothing gravelly voice. Almost all of the reptile's body is grayish-blue, with a red-orange underbelly and arms. He lacks a visible nose and has large, black stripes all over his body. Goanna has large, powerful claws and light-green eyes with black eyelids. Real goannas are supposed to be carnivores, but FernGully's is seen purposely eating a large tree branch.
In the FilmEven if Goanna is a secondary character, he gets to sing a full song named "If I'm Gonna Eat Somebody (It Might As Well Be You)",which he sings as he toys around with Zak which was written by Jimmy Buffett and Michael Utley. While singing, He's trying to eat Zak, one of the main characters who was accidentally shrunk to fairy size by Crysta's magic. Before swallowing Zak, Crysta argues that Zak is her friend, so he can't eat him, and Goanna spits out Zak.
Goanna is very greedy and enjoys toying with Zak like a cat and mouse. He could have easily eaten Zak at any point in the song but instead he hangs back letting Zak run off.
Here's a list of the only lines spoken (not sung) by Goanna through the whole film:
•Goanna: Check this out.
•Goanna: [about to eat Zak] Welcome to the food chain. Crysta: No, you can't eat him! 'He's a human!
Goanna: Uhh... what's a human?
Batty Koda: Delicious and nutritious! Tastes just like chicken! [Crysta glares at Batty, then flies over to the Goanna]
Crysta: [about Zak] He's my friend.
Goanna: Any friend of a fairy... [spits out Zak]
Goanna: ... is a friend of mine. Crysta: Thanks a lot.
Goanna: You owe me a free dinner after this one.
Goanna is similar to a minor character named "Moto Moto" from another animated feature film, "Madagascar 2: Escape Africa", in the fact that both animals are voiced by famous American rappers with similar voices, and both appear shortly on their respective film.
