Shrek is a 2001 computer animated feature length film. It was released in theaters in 2001. The animated film went on to receive the first Academy Award for the Best Animated Feature Film, a category created in 2001, as well as many other film awards for animation style, storyline, incorporation of music and voicing of characters. The film’s popularity was so great that two sequels have followed the unorthodox fairytale and more are under production.

Shrek is the story of an independent ogre named Shrek (Mike Meyers) who sets out on a quest to find a princess for Lord Farquaad in hopes that his efforts will win him back his land so he can live in the quiet depths of his swamp in peace once again. Donkey (Eddie Murphey) befriends Shrek along the way and accompanies him on his journey to find the feisty Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz). Their travels and adventures lead them back to Lord Farquaad’s kingdom where secrets are revealed the plot is turned and Shrek and Princess Fiona fall in love. The plot of the movie has many pop culture references included for comedic relief and the twist on a classic fairytale keeps audiences laughing for hours. This entertaining plot paired with a very impressive display of computer generated imagery added to the success of the movie. DreamWorks attention to detail within their imagery allowed for realistic looking backgrounds, clothing, and movement.
